back to the future

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS of getting over unhappy past and guaranteeing a happy and successful future is to practise making yourself feel better for no particular reason. If you wake up in the morning and feel good, you'll make better decisions about what to do with your life. People are making problems for themselves all the time. Some break up with a  partner and then they go out and get drunk to meet other people, and a couple of hours and a lot of beer or whiskey later they're telling ssomeone they only met a little while ago how much they love them. Then they wake up in the morning and find they're in bed with a piece of wood. Sometimes people do stupid things and say later they acted like that because they were "confused", but one of the things I have discoved over years is that confusion is not a state that should lead to stupidity. It's a door to new understanding. If you begin to think of things as difficult, they will be. If you begin to study what makes ...

Erickson's position on marriage therapy

Erickon emphasized to couples that they could not (and need not aspire to)  share equal all the things because bilolgically they are totally different creatures and have many different interests. They just need enough mutual interests and pleasures to create a healthy balance between autonomy and realationship. In that balance, both individuals are accomplishing certain things for self, for each other, and for their live together. Like much of Erickson's wisdom, this notion of balance sounds  simple in theory. And yet it can be too complex for many people to put into practice. Erickson explained that many people "grow up in convicition of the goodness of their ideas ... They never learn to respect the goodness of separate ideas ... and they get into difficulty when they try to influence each other". In this framework, problems in marriage result from too much effort on the part of each spouse to convert the other spouse. Furthermore, each holds the faulty b...

無為

Wu wei ( traditional Chinese : 無爲 ; simplified Chinese : 无为 ; pinyin : wúwéi) is an important concept of Taoism (Daoism), that involves knowing when to act and when not to act. Another perspective to this is that "Wu Wei" means natural action - as planets revolve around the sun, they "do" this revolving, but without "doing" it; or as trees grow, they "do", but without "doing". Thus knowing when (and how) to act is not knowledge in the sense that one would think " now " is the right time to do " this ", but rather just doing it, doing the natural thing. Wu may be translated as not have or without ; Wei may be translated as do, act, serve as, govern or effort . The literal meaning of Wu Wei is "without action" and is often included in the paradox wei wu wei : "action without action" or "effortless doing". The practice of wu wei and the efficacy of wei wu wei are fundamental tenets ...

Zeig's key assumptions

> The benevolent intent  of the practitioner. This assumes that all healing takes place within the self and can be assisted by the therapist, but that the therapist follows the lead of the client and assesses and utilize whatever the client presents > The unconscious contains solution to problems that can be retrieved to help facilitate optimum health and functioning. > By metaphor and other forms of indirect suggestion, the therapist may facilitate a series of internal responses that can lead to the desired change. The change may or may not overt or immediately measurable or observable. > The therapist assists in the facilitation of a reorganization of the client's inner world so that life can be experienced as less problematic and, therefore, the symptom may no longer be necessary. > The unconscious mind tends to be benign and generally healthseeking.

wisdom of Erickson

Erickson said,  "You are as unique as your fingerprints. There never has been , and never will be, anyone exactly like you. So you have the right to be that, fully. There are things you can change, but other things are like your fingerprints. You can't change them. So just accept them."

As a Hypnotherapist while in apporaching any patient must ask : Do I have adequate clinical training to understanding and to anticipate the probable responses from this specific patient? Do I have an an adequate foundation in  my hypnotic training to use hypnosis as an adjubctive tool in the treatment of this particular patient? Do I have sufficient understanding about my patient's unique strengths, concerns, and motivations to utilize them within the context of hypnosis toward a therapeutic outcome? Do I have the flexibilty andd experience to employ the responses of this specific patient in the service of the therapeutic goal? Do I have sufficient supervision available with which to confer as I expand the boundaries of my skills and experience in the use of hypnosis as therapeutic tool?     extract form Handbook of Ericksonian Psychotherapy

what are my motivations (for those therapists)

Erickson stated, "When you are working hynotically with a patient, your orientation should centre around the patient's needs. Whenever you try to maximized your own ego through a patent you start losing ground. That is why we are so much opposed to the teaching of stage hypnosis techniques, because stage hypnotists are oriented about themselves as operators, not about their subjects. In medical and dental hypnosis, you need to orient everything about patient. It is the patient who is the important person."

Ericksonian psychotherapy

It has been William J. Matthews' experience that the average Ericksonian-oriented therapist, when asked to describe the defining characteristic of Milton Erickson's approach to therapy, would be likely to say, "Erickson had no limitimg theory of psychotherapy or personality. He was interested in what worked." Rossi (Erickson & Rossi, 1980) makes this point in discussing Erickson's notion of the "limiting preconceptions of most schools of psychotherapy". Erickson notes that in the field of psychotherapy, there has been an overemphasis on theory and rigidity of practice. This is particularly evident in psychoanalysis with its underlying psychodynamic orientation, which, although actually practiced by few therapists, continues to influence the field (e.g. notions of a repressed unconxcious, defense mechanisms, stages of development). Erickson made these observation in the 1950s, at a time when these beliefs were probably even more pronounced than today....
